Treatment Alternatives – Music and Fine Arts Program

My name is Gary Wayne, I am the Music and
Fine Arts Director of Treatment Alternatives and what we do here is we
like to take you out of yourself so to speak. You can express yourself through
theater, music, we do creative writing, for instance, writing something about a
character that you just came up with
inside of your mind and then what you
would do is write something about yourself and then compare the two. The
person that they’ve made up in their mind is kind of like the person that
they want to be and when they’re here, we use that creativity to try to make them
become the person that they want to be, through music, through writing. Sometimes
they’ll give me something that they wrote, a story or a poem, and we’ll take
that and we’ll put it into lyrical form, and then once we put it into lyrical form
we’ll put it into music, and then once we put into music, they can come into the
studio and they can record a song that they wrote, they get the copyright, and
they have gone on that journey of creativity and get excited about what
they’ve done; what came out of their mind. We’ll go into the group room, we’ll do
improvisation exercises where they can be somebody else besides themselves. When
they do an improvisation, they’re thinking
quickly on their feet. They’re using
their mind, the mind that was so passive the last week, month, or year
and it was just absorbed in nothingness has now become creative. Instead of not knowing what to do and using, now they can think of something
else creative to do, “Well, I could write, I can play guitar.” Some of the clients
have come in here and started learning how to play guitar, some of them have
started learning how to play keyboard and it’s a whole beginners course and if
they choose to use that after they leave here, they have a structure so they have
the original structure of basic chords or basic patterns, or they know that this
is a C, this is a D, this is an E. They have that kick start and once that motor
starts turning and keep the motor going they can expand on their innerself and what they haven’t had in the last week month year while the addiction
took over and they can slowly become themselves again while learning about
the addiction and while learning about the disease that they have a while
learning about how they can correct their selves to become the person that
they want to be
