ROAD CONE (1998)

4 TRACKS RECORDED LIVE BY MICHAEL EHLERS
AT THE MEETING HALL,
AMHERST MASSACHUSETTS
23 MAY 1997

FROM THE ROAD CONE CATALOG:

San Agustin's beautiful, 35 minute debut is as marvelously lyrical, pure and obliquely moving as anything they've released. Bryan Fielden's free jazz drumming provides a measure of blood-rush while allowing for plenty of manouvering room for concise interplay between guitarists David Daniell and Andrew Burnes, who revel in sustain and feedback as well as stuttering yet lyrical staccato phrasings a la Loren MazzaCane Connors.

Theirs is a tensile and elegant improvisation with nods toward jazz and drone, and the natural reverb of Amherst's Meeting House, the site of this live recording, only enhances the sense of itinerant discovery. Sustain and drone simmer in rising expectation, punctuated by mournful guitar phrasings and emotionally connected full drum kit work. This terrific LP, with hand-screened covers printed at cCrak Press, is limited to 400 copies.
